MA History

Master History with Specialisation in the History of Science

Within the general master’s programme of history the history of science is one possible area of specialisation. General designs and methods, practical research and presentation are taught together with the other subject areas like global history, Austrian history, history of Eastern Europe, women's and gender history, economic and social history and more. Then an introduction to the history of science, and several research seminars may lead up to a master's thesis within this area.

MA STS

Master in Science and Technology Studies

Established in 2009 and taught exclusively in English, each year the four semester research-oriented Science and Technology Studies (STS) programme selects an international cohort of 25 students. It is department policy to accept students from all disciplinary backgrounds, and new guest professors are invited each semester to teach courses in the department.

Science, technology, and innovation shape modern life in countless ways. Some of these are perceived as positive, others are deeply controversial. Policy, corporations, media and other social actors in turn influence how knowledge and technologies are produced. Science and technology studies analyzes these interactions, and aims to foster critical and reflexive debates on the relation of science, technology and society.

There are also Complementary Study Programmes (Minors) for several programs of study (in German).

MA HPS

Master History and Philosophy of Science (A 066 944)

The master’s programme in History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Vienna is jointly taught by faculty from our five history departments, the Institute Vienna Circle, the STS department, and the Institute of Philosophy. The program equips students with the knowledge and competency to carry out investigations in history, cultural studies and philosophy in a broad sense of academic research. Students acquire substantial and methodologically precise competences in reconstructing, analysing and assessing:

1. the historical development of the discipline (central concepts, fields of knowledge, institutions, biographies) in all of its political, social, cultural, and gender-specific contexts; 2. models and questions in the philosophy of science; 3. the social motives, interrelations and consequences of academic research.
